The naturally formed Chembra heart-shaped lake is widely considered as the true symbol of love and eternal beauty. The lake is also known as ‘Hridayathadakam’ in the local language. Situated at an altitude of 2100 meters (6,890 feet) above sea level, atop of the Chembra peak, which is one of the highest peaks in the Western Ghats and the highest in Wayanad district. Lake atop the hills is one of the marvelous sights on the way to the peak. It is surrounded by gorgeous landscape and lush green meadow spanning over 100 hectares of land which had wild elephants, deers, and other wild animals. The lake is said to have never dried up.

Chembra peak

‘Chembra peak’ or ‘Chembra mala’ is an amazing trekking spot in south India. It is located near Meppadi town in Wayanad district and is a glorious part of Wayanad hill ranges in the Western Ghats that comprises the Nilgiri hills and Vellarimala in Kozhikode district. Chembra peak is also the highest and largest peak in the Western Ghats. Like most of the rainforest trekking spots in south India, it does not have unpredictable terrain. Trekking to the Chembra peak can satisfy anyone who is interested in nature. The peak is filled with a waft of wind and fluffy clouds and possesses a vast variety of endangered flora and fauna. This place is not only an ideal place for trekking activities but also a perfect spot to spend an adventurous holiday. There are numerous peaks nearby Chembra as it is covered with dense forest it is difficult to climb over there. From the top of the peak, we will get a beautiful view of the whole Wayanad district and a slight view of Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Nilgiri hills. Trekking to the spot starts from tea plantations and gradually moves to dense forest. This path shows a panoramic view of grasslands, green forested landscape, and valleys

How to reach Chembra peak?

Chembra peak is located eight-kilometer south of Kalpetta, specifically in Meppadi town.  From Meppadi town we can reach Chembra peak by foot through three hours of Trekking. We can use private vehicles until a particular point; rented jeeps are also available there. Beyond that point vehicle, plastic bottle, food etc is not allowed.  Total trek distance is 3.5 kilometer on one side. Trekking to the peak is under the control of South Wayanad Forest Development Agency. District Tourism Promotion Council provides guides and trekking equipment on hire charges to tourists. Trekking charge for a group of 10 members is 500 and for international tourists, the amount is 1000 for a 10 members group. As there is a threat from lurking wild animals overnight camping is not allowed at Chembra peak. The Time allowed for trekking is 7 AM to 2 PM. The nearest railway station is Kozhikode railway station, which is about 79 km away and the nearest airport is Calicut international airport with a distance of 92 kilometers.
