The temple lies at an altitude of 3000 feet (914 meters) near the Karnataka – Kerala border. Thirunelli Temple can be accessed from Mananthavady (31.3 km), Kalpetta (54.5 km) or Kutta, Karnataka (19.5 km). There are several KSRTC Bus services to the Thirunelli Temple. One important service is between Vaikom Temple and Thirunelli Temple. A Limited Stop Fast Passenger connects Piravom, Kolenchery, Perumbavoor, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Mananthavady and Kalpetta. The temple is open between 5.30 AM and 12 PM in the forenoon and 5.30 PM and 8 PM in the afternoon. You can also plan a trekking trip to Pakshipathalam (10 km away from Thirunelli Temple).
The nearest railway station is at Mysore and the nearest airports are Kozhikode International Airport (120 km), Bangalore International Airport (290 km), and Kannur International Airport (58 km).
7.Chethalayam Water Falls
Chethalayam waterfall is a seasonal waterfall. The stream can go narrow and even completely dry during the summer season. If your intention is to enjoy the sight of a mighty waterfall and to get wet in its light shower you better consider visiting the falls during the monsoon or early winter (June to February). The stream can be a bit unpredictable and dangerous during the high monsoon since the water level can increase with less warning.
The visitors are required to get passes from the Forest Range Office check post at Chethalayam. Their permission is mandatory to get into the jungle and to the surroundings of the Chethalayam waterfalls. One can also avail the service of a guide from the check post. The visiting time is between 6 AM and 5 PM. The nearest town is Kidangand 12 Kilometers from Sulthan Bathery and 37 kilometers from Kalpetta. The nearest railway station and is Kozhikode Railway station (97 km) and the nearest airport is Calicut International Airport (120 km).
8.CHEMBRA PEAK AND THE HEART SHAPED LAKE
How to reach Chembra peak?
Chembra peak is located eight-kilometer south of Kalpetta, specifically in Meppadi town. From Meppadi town we can reach Chembra peak by foot through three hours of Trekking. We can use private vehicles until a particular point; rented jeeps are also available there. Beyond that point vehicle, plastic bottle, food etc is not allowed. Total trek distance is 3.5 kilometer on one side. Trekking to the peak is under the control of South Wayanad Forest Development Agency. District Tourism Promotion Council provides guides and trekking equipment on hire charges to tourists. Trekking charge for a group of 10 members is 500 and for international tourists, the amount is 1000 for a 10 members group. As there is a threat from lurking wild animals overnight camping is not allowed at Chembra peak. The Time allowed for trekking is 7 AM to 2 PM. The nearest railway station is Kozhikode railway station, which is about 79 km away and the nearest airport is Calicut international airport with a distance of 92 kilometers.
Soochipara waterfalls is located in Vellarimala, at a distance of 13 kilometers from Meppadi town of Wayanad. The path is another surprise for the tourists since it leads through the sprawling green plantation. From basement, you will need to descent down for 30 minutes to reach the waterfalls. There will be a security check at the basement to avoid plastic waste inside the forest. The trekking is another beautiful experience where you have to trek inside the forest through the rocks. The path is made of natural rock steps, which reduces the difficulty of the trekking. Monsoon is the preferred time to visit Soochipara waterfalls but during heavy rain, the place is not safe to visit. The nearest airport and railway station is Calicut. Wayanad district is well connected to Ooty as well as Mysore.
10.Banasura Sagar Dam and The Banasura Peak
Being located at the foothills of the Banasura hills, the dam offers a spectacular view of the Banasura peak and the surrounding grass meadows on the hilltop. The dam reservoir has a number of natural islands scattered across this vast water body. These miniature islands provide a unique beauty to the reservoir and make it one of its kinds among other dams in the Western Ghats. The dam authorities provide various entertainment activities to the visitors. These include speed boating through the reservoir, trek to the Banasura hills, and a visit to the nearby park.
The dam is located about 21 kilometres from the nearest town Kalpetta. There is a decent distance between the parking area and to the top of the dam. You can either walk to the top or take an off-road vehicle from the parking area to the top.
