Some of the major trekking spots are Chembra peak, Pakshipathalam, Banasura, and Brahmagiri peak. Climbing 2100 kilometres above sea level Chembra peak is the highest peak in Wayanad with a heart-shaped lake on the way to the peak.
Pakshipathalam located at an elevation of 1740 meters and is heaven for bird watchers and photographers. Banasura hill scores the position of the second highest peak in Wayanad. This is known for the panoramic misty view of nature. Brahmagiri peak shares the borders of Kodagu district as well as Wayanad, Which is about 1608 meter high.
Most of the wild ecosystem in Wayanad is strictly protected and preserved. Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is a proper example for this. It was established in 1973, with the explicit objective of preserving the biological heritage of the district. The region consists of a wide variety of fauna and flora. Management of the sanctuary is based on scientific conservation with a suitable consideration to the common lifestyle of the tribes and others, whose lives are depended on the forest. Wildlife tours in Wayanad are not limited to this sanctuary. There is Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, Bird Sanctuary in the north Wayanad, Tiger valley etc.
Wayanad is the only district in Kerala, which shares its boundary with two other states, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. This makes Wayanad one of the easily reachable destinations from both of the states. For the Karnataka travellers, it is advisable to take Bangalore – Wayanad route, which is about 287.2 kilometres. Preferably choose a slow night ride. If you start late at night, you can easily reach Wayanad by the next day evening.
